Winning a contest can introduce you to influential people and boost your portfolio. While it’s tempting to enter every contest you find, not all contests are created equal. Here’s how to find a contest that gives you the best chance of winning:
What’s the contest theme?
If you’re serious about winning, look for contests that use techniques, materials, or themes that you’ve used before. This allows you to concentrate on developing a unique twist or a more complex design, rather than worrying about the basics. If you still want to enter a contest in a new niche, don’t despair. It’s still possible to win, depending upon the answers to the remaining questions below.
Who won last year?
Nothing is more valuable than being able to see the contest winners from previous years. The official rules may state that the competition is open to all types of work, but looking at the entries will tell you if there is an unwritten preference for certain colors, styles, or motifs. If you’re entering a contest for the prestige factor–something to list on your resume or help you win a book deal–you’ll want to compete in contests that are judged by those respected in the field.
